ANIM1001 Animation Origin and Function - Week 9 (23/11/2011)

So in animation we went about finishing off and presenting our animatics.

My group decided to use our time in trying to get the timing of ours to a decent level at least what seemed like one.

after we presented our we got some advice on the timing and pacing, we really should have looked into it more.

There were places that warranted more frames to help tell the story and places that warranted a change in how long they lasted.

In the end we decided to re do the whole thing in our own times, we decided this time to go with a uniform style and to judge for ourselves how many frames our individual sections would take.

After that we looked at some examples of animatics from the 2nd and 3rd years to get a better idea of the kind of pacing that we were working towards.

And thats all for now, Thanks for reading :).

ANIM1001 Animation Origin and Function - Group Meet Up Week 9 (22/11/2011)

Ok so on tuesday I got together with my group for animation and we set to work in piecing together and organise the animatic for our final group animation.

We just focused on getting the story board scanned in and getting the images cut and in the right order.

we used an older version of Imovie as we had been taught it worked well for animatics.

We didn't really bother with the timing of each frame as we decided to do that in our lesson the next day.

I felt the group worked fairly well, though we could have spent some time then on the timing of the animatic as the key thing we are working on for this module is timing in animation.

Thats all for now, I know it was kind of short but there wasn't really much to it. Thanks for reading :).

ANIM1001 Animation Origin and Function - Week 8 (16/11/2011)

Today in animation it was kind of an unprepared lecture, we thought that our tutor would be helping out with the open day activities but he was changed back to our lecture on short notice for both him and us so he didn't have anything prepared to show us.

So instead he showed us a technique for creating an animatic and set us to work drawing some small storyboards for our final animation project so that we could turn them into animatics.

Last lesson we had divided our animation into 5 sections between the group and decided on which section each person would do. Mine being part 4.

Our basic premis is to produce a looped animation of a teddy bear being assembled and then dis-assembled, my part was the removal of the head. I chose to reprisent this with some lasers and a grabby claw :3.

We managed to get our story boards scanned into a computer but only got some of them cut and prepared for the animatic.

All in all the group worked pretty well together and didn't have to many problems aside from some lack of photoshop knowledge.

Well thats all for now, thanks for reading :).

ANIM1001 Animation Origin and Function - Week 7 (9/11/2011)

For animation we started off finishing and presenting our animations, although due to some technical difficulties some peoples (including mine) didn't work properly which was a shame :(.

After that we were each asked to come and see our tutor in his office so he could ask us if we were enjoying the module and if there were any ways we could improve it.

We finished off by getting together in our groups that we were assigned at the beginning of the year to discusse ideas for our final animation project.

We all threw around ideas on what we could animate, some good some bad and some rather weird, but in the end we decided on an animated loop of a conveyer belt assembling and disassembling a teddybear we then decided on who would animate what.

I'm rather happy with how our group came together and all pitched in ideas and how we decided who would animate what sections.

Thats all for now, thans for reading :).

Reading/Learning Week - Wind Animation (6/11/2011)

For Reading Week my animation tutor gave us the task of creating a short animation using the that displays the effects of wind on an object.

Here is the result of my work.

Overall it took about 71 frames and I think it's not bad for my first attempt at something other then balls for once.

However there are a few things I'm not to happy with, for instance the middle scene went a little to fast and I really should have better studied how leafs blow in the wind so I had a better idea of when to speed up and when to slow down.

I had to upload this one to my bliptv account because for some reason the program I normally use to turn these animations into gifs doesn't seem to be working on this one, maybe its to big since due to using a different computer it was saved as a bigger file then it should have been.

Anyway thats all for now :)

ANIM1001 Animation Origin and Function Week 5 (26/10/2011)

In Animation we continued to look through animation history, this time looking into some Canadian animators.

We covered a period from 1938 to 1988, the animations and animators we looked at were The Toucher by Lotte Reiniger 1938, Free Radicals by Len Lye 1958, Blinkity Blank by Norman McLaren 1955, Neighbours by Norman McLaren 1952, La Faim by Peter Foldes 1974 and The Cat Came Back by Cordell Barker 1988.

The week before we had been told to study the way 2 different balls bounce as we would be animating 2 balls bouncing as the practical task for this lesson. I like many others decided to do a light weight and heavy weight balls.

The above animation is the result of my work, if i remember right this took about 19 to 20 or so frames.

There are a few things I've not really happy with in this, I feel the beginning drop of the heavy ball should have been a bit more vertical to help emphasise its weight instead of coming in at roughly the same angel as the lighter ball.

I also think I should have made the heavy ball roll off frame instead of making it stop unnaturally like that.

I tried my hand at making the heavy ball seem to roll this time around by shading it in black and leaving a small dot of white for a reference point.

It didn't come out to well but it was a first attempt so its not surprising.

I'm still not happy with the way the lighter ball bounces although its not to pointy like that time it almost looks like it's skipping this time like a stone skimming on water.

Aside from that I'm fairly happy with it, I can see a definite improvement from last week.

Thats all for now :).

ANIM1001 Animation Origin and Function - Week 4 (19/10/2011)

This week in Animation we covered the time period of  1953 to 1987 ad looked at things such as the Configuration of consistent and recognizable characters, Continuity, Narrative form, Unity of style and Adherence to the production line.

We covered these subjects watching the old animations of "Duck a Much" by Chuck Jones from 1953, "Sisyphus" by Marcell Jankovics from 1974, "The Street by Caroline Leaf from 1976, "End of Stalinism in Bohemia by Jan Svankmijor from 1976 and "Your Face" by Bill Plympton from 1987.

After that we were set the task of using out pegbars and some light boxes to produce a short animation of a bouncing ball, thinking about its trajectory as well as how many and how close the frames would need to be to speed up and slow down the ball as well as how it would stretch when moving or hitting the ground.

Here is the result of my work.

I draw and total of about 25 frames but only used 24 as the cut off of the animation made the last frame pointless.

Personally there are a few things I'm not happy with, I feel that the start off of the ball bouncing was a little slow and each bounce seems kind of unnatural as if the ball is consciously aiming for those particular spots, lastly I feel I went a bit over board with some of the stretching and it makes the ball seem to pointy in some places.

At the end of the lesson we were told to research how both heavy and light wait balls differ in the way they bounce as we would be animating both at the same time next week.
